A dental emergency involves situations requiring immediate attention to alleviate severe pain, stop bleeding, or prevent further damage to teeth or oral tissues. Prompt action in these cases can save teeth, reduce complications, and improve outcomes.

Common Dental Emergencies

  • Severe Toothache (Pulpitis or Abscess)

    • Symptoms: Sharp, throbbing pain; swelling; fever; bad taste in the mouth (indicating infection).
    • Causes: Deep cavity, infected tooth pulp, or dental abscess.
    • Action: Rinse with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain relievers, and see a dentist immediately.
    • Broken Orthodontic Device
Action: Use orthodontic wax to cover sharp or protruding wires. Do not attempt to cut the wire yourself.
Seek Help: Visit your orthodontist for repairs. Soft Tissue Injuries (Tongue, Lips, Cheeks, Gums)
Action: Rinse your mouth with salt water to clean the area. Apply pressure with gauze to stop bleeding and a cold compress to reduce swelling.

    • Symptoms: Missing tooth and bleeding socket.
    • Causes: Trauma, such as accidents or sports injuries.

    • Symptoms: Persistent or heavy bleeding, especially after trauma or dental procedures.
    • Causes: Injury, gum disease, or post-extraction complications.
    • Action: Apply gentle pressure with gauze to stop bleeding. Seek immediate care if it doesn’t stop within 15 minutes.
  • Swelling in the Face or Jaw

    • Symptoms: Swollen areas, difficulty opening the mouth, or breathing issues.
    • Causes: Dental abscess, trauma, or severe infection.
    • Action: This could indicate a spreading infection (cellulitis) and requires urgent medical or dental attention.
